A Starbucks-heavy Money Diary | What Did I Spend Last Week? Nov 1-7, 2021
By my standards, this was a very frugal week!
Monday
Another day, another early-morning wake-up!
These days I’m getting up at or before 6am. Brandin leaves for work between 6am and 6.15am, so if I want to have a shower and have him watch Atlas while I do it, I need to be up with the larks.
To be clear: I can – and I have – left Atlas in his bassinet while I showered, or lying in his Snuggle Me, where I can see him from the shower door, but unless he’s asleep he screams when he’s left alone, so it’s better for everyone involved (but mostly for him) if I can shower when Brandin’s there to look after him.
Today is a shower day so I’m up at around 5.30am; Brandin takes Atlas downstairs and, when I emerge from the shower, Atlas is fast asleep in his swing, the traitor.
Though I’ve left Patreon as a creator, I’m not on a Patreon boycott, so the first of the month always sees some payments come out for creators I follow. ($19.60)
The total should be a bit higher; I make a mental note to check on my subscriptions and update my payment details if possible (I do neither of these things as mental notes are basically rubbish and achieve nothing).
Mid-morning, I decide to make a Starbucks run. Atlas loves the car and I need to get out of the house every few days! Plus, I’m trying to kick my Starbucks-via-Uber-Eats habit. It’s simply not sustainable. I top up my account and grab a latte and a croissant. ($10)
When we get home it’s time to eat (for Atlas), the 35th nappy change of the day and down for a sleep… We bought a Snoo, the outrageously overpriced robot bassinet that lulls your baby to sleep using white noise and “gentle” rocking – it looks very violent at times, honestly – and Atlas does not love it, which is very frustrating.
So I’m trying to get him into it for more and more of his naps, which until now had been taking place on one of us or in his swing. I’m aware of the fact that he’s only a tiny baby and craves human touch and warmth, so I’m not against the odd on-the-chest sleep, but it’s more that if he seems tired I’ll actively put him down for a nap in the Snoo. If he falls asleep on me, so be it.
Brandin and the boys get home at around 5.30pm and we have pasta and bolognese (they have pasta sauce from the jar because they are fusspots and hate everything cooked by human hand) and then watch the live-action Mulan, which, honestly, is a bit weird.
Atlas falls asleep around 7.30pm most nights, waking up at 9.30pm and then is wide awake when we’d like to be putting him to bed, and tonight is no different. I finally put him down, after feeding and changing him (rinse, repeat) at around 11pm.
Daily total: $29.60
