In light of the recent presidential election, and the imminent inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States, I asked a selection of women to write a piece for Anchor Baby that in some way illustrated their feelings about, reaction to or relationship with the results. This is the first installment in that series, in which Kasey Wallace relays a conversation she had with her son.
Kasey is a writer, artist and photographer based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She also happens to be mother to my two stepsons, Finn and William, and a good friend. Kasey is from Garrett and has lived in Indiana all her life.
My children and I have always had wonderful and insightful conversations, growing in complexity as they’ve gotten older. Bedtime is a frequent favorite for these little moments, most likely in an effort to stall, but I indulge them a bit, nonetheless.
As I was saying goodnight to my 10 year old last night, he popped his head up from a plethora of stuffies and said, “Mom, I think my friends ____ and ____ don’t like Trump.” His face was matter-of-fact with a tinge of surprise, eyebrows raised and a soft smile kicking up at the edges of his lips.
