Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter Ghosted Me | How Much Did I Spend Last Week? Feb 20-26, 2023
(And no, she's definitely not dead. She's just not that into us.)
The countdown to Brandin starting work – we have two weeks left – has started and, while I am obviously happy that he found something and excited to get good health insurance that covers the teeth cleaning I need, I’m also dreading him going back to the office.
For one thing, I like having him around! But for another, possibly more pressing, thing, I like having him here to watch the baby so I can get work done. From next week, I’ll be working in the narrow window I have while the baby is napping, on weekends and probably a few evenings a week, too. Not ideal, but we’ll make do.
Why don’t you get some childcare? you might ask! Well, because we got our tax bill this week and somehow owe almost $6,000 to the IRS – we thought we were on top of things but underestimated our 2022 earnings – so we can’t really afford it, quite aside from which, anywhere I’ve enquired about has no openings for the next six months.
And you may remember that I did hire a babysitter, who came a few afternoons before, just… ghosting me. Yes, my babysitter ghosted me. Mom life is HARD.
Monday
Today I have a long – long – list of things to do for work, including writing two freelance articles along with my money diary; recording and editing an episode of the podcast; uploading and scheduling that same podcast episode; doing some podcast admin around upcoming sponsorships and some promo we’re hoping to do… and by some major miracle, I manage to get it all done.
That’s on top of waking twice during the night to feed the baby and nursing him to sleep for both of his naps and for bedtime.
Today is one of those days that makes me feel like I’m terrifyingly close to burnout, but I also know it’s an anomaly, and the fact that I manage to get everything ticked off my list means I can take tomorrow completely off work to catch my breath, so it’s okay. THIS IS FINE.
After dinner, I’m back up to the office to finish editing the podcast episode and then, when I’m done with that, I take a quick trip to Kroger to get some bits and bobs we need. This, believe it or not, is the relaxing part of my day. A trip to Kroger! On my own! I listen to a podcast and just enjoy being alone with my thoughts and my shopping trolley. ($91.81)
