Irish Eyes are Smiling | How Much Did I Spend Last Week? Sep 26-Oct 2, 2022
Or something.
I’m home in Ireland this week – not as I write this, but as it happened – and I have learned some valuable lessons about transatlantic travel, lessons I will impart in a future article. Having done it twice, I am now an expert on voyaging with a baby, so you have that thrill to look forward to.
In any case, I’m at home in Ireland, we’re doing a lot of cuddling on the couch and, despite doing very little, we’re still spending a lot. Who could have guessed, etc!
Monday
My aunt and uncle are at home in Ireland at the same time as me – they live in the UK so they’re staying in my parents’ house too – which means that we’re doing a lot of crosswords and hanging out on the couch together. It feels weirdly Christmassy.
Due to the fact that Atlas is a terror who thinks every single television / computer / photo frame is touchscreen, we can’t really watch TV – my parents’ TV is on a low stand and he keeps crawling over and whacking it, coming dangerously close to knocking the whole thing over more than once. So it’s safer for all involved if we keep it off.
Today the plan is to chill out at home; Mum goes for a walk with Atlas and my aunt and uncle (I stay at home due to my ankle still technically being broken; I’m down to wearing my boot as needed, but after last week’s travel day it’s feeling a bit ouchy) and I do some reading, listen to some podcasts and play some Tetris.
My Book of the Month subscription – I had put it on hold for a few months but clearly entirely forgot that my hold was ending – comes out ($17.11), as does my subscription to Lindy West’s Butt News ($5). I haven’t read the last few updates – she does long, in-depth and hilarious film breakdowns, and I tend not to read them if I haven’t seen the movie – but as a big fan of hers, it feels good to support her with my $5.
My friend Hannah texts to let me know that the book club she’s invited me to join has chosen its next book, Ashley Flowers’ (of Crime Junkie) All Good People Here, so I buy it on Kindle. My Kindle account is still on UK amazon and I haven’t figured out how to change it so… yeah. It’s in sterling. (£6.53, around $7.35)
While I’m buying the book, I somehow sign up to Kindle Unlimited (£7.99, around $8.99) – I swear to God it offered me a free trial, but it has charged me so I’ll need to figure out (a) if it’s worth it and (b) how to cancel. (Have any of you signed up to Kindle Unlimited?! Is it any use?)
Today, for the first day since we arrived last Tuesday morning, Atlas is finally back on his usual schedule of long morning naps, a little afternoon cat nap and sleeping – with a few breaks to nurse – around 11 hours at night, which is great but also shit cos we’re leaving on Thursday. But mostly great because it means that I, too, am finally getting some sleep!
Daily total: $38.45
