it took four attempts, approximately 7,000 treats and half a dozen scratches to get Mel Brooks into this carrier

Earlier this week, for 36 hours exactly – 24 of which happened to coincide with the date of my 39th birthday – I was sick.

The previous day, I’d taken the cat and the dog to the vet, ostensibly for their boosters but, in the end, for a combination of tests and shots and antibiotics that almost bankrupted us entirely (details of which to come in a money diary soon…).

I made some bad decisions that day, but stopping for a large coffee en route was one of them.
