Note to Self: Wear Sunscreen | How Much Did I Spend Last Week? May 27-June 2, 2024
Be smart. Not like me. Wear sunscreen.
Monday
One of these days I’ll get a handle on what all of these national days mean, but for now I can be proud that I know what today is (Memorial Day!) and what it’s for (to honour those who have died in service to their country).
I am not too proud, however, to admit the reason I know this. A few weeks ago while in Walmart, I shared a photo of some of their Memorial Day decor – basically, fake floral crosses, the kind you’d see on every other grave in an Irish cemetery – with the flippant caption, “you can get everything in Walmart!” and was promptly schooled on my disrespect in the face of these very clearly Memorial Day theme items.
So. All of that is to say, it’s Memorial Day! And we’ve decided to bring some food over to Brandin’s dad’s house this afternoon to barbecue in his back garden. Because Atlas is an angel baby who still naps for between three and four hours an afternoon, we’re planning on waking him up early (early!) at 3pm or so and going then, picking the boys up from their mom’s en route.
I spend the morning pottering around the house, reading my book – Demon Copperhead, which I am 200 pages into (of 500-plus) and have to finish by book club on Saturday – and do a little work, by which I mean, write a piece for Substack and then spend a while browsing Amazon, where I buy some bird seed, replacement traps for our insect trap thing, Clorox wipes and a Happy Cappy bundle of shampoo and a little brush, as recommended by Atlas’ hair stylist, for his persistent cradle cap. ($54.80)
Once Atlas is up we head over to Dedo’s where we have chicken thighs, corn on the cob, mac and cheese, a cucumber and feta salad I made (which is delish but does not last, the cucumber shed all its liquid and by the following morning it was basically a very acidic soup), and some grilled salmon (Atlas eats only mac and cheese, in case you wondered).
It’s very nice and we get to play with all of Dedo’s dogs – Daisy, Coco, Diesel and Phoebe – before we head home to put the boys to bed and relax for a bit before we head to bed, too.
My Google storage subscription comes out. ($3.24)
