The Baguette Maketh the Meal | How Much Did I Spend Last Week? May 29-June 4, 2023
Monday
Today is Memorial Day in the US, so we’re going to our friends K and J’s house for ribs and to swim in their pool.
That’s not until around 3pm and we made the terrible mistake of telling the boys it was happening, so the entire morning is spent telling them exactly how many minutes are left until go time.
I make a potato salad and a pavlova to bring with us, this time leaving it in the oven to cool down, in an attempt to prevent cracking. It doesn’t work, but that’s fine – cover it in enough whipped cream and fruit and no one will notice.
Once Atlas wakes up from his nap, we head over, taking two cars so that one of us can take him home at bedtime. I never thought I’d end up being this kind of rigid parent about nap and bedtimes, but he gets so unhappy and grumpy when he’s overtired, and I find it really hard to deal with, so sticking to a rigid schedule is the lesser of two evils.
It’s a lovely afternoon. The sun is shining, the food is delicious and the company is great. Atlas loves swimming, which is adorable but also a pain in the arse because he freaks out when he is removed from the pool, even if his lips and teeth are chattering dramatically from the cold. (I’ve decided those long-sleeved, long-legged swimsuits, though great for protecting from the sun, aren’t ideal for the pool because they just stay wet – and therefore cold – for so long.)
I take him home at around 8.30pm, when it becomes clear that he’s no longer able for all of this stimulation. He roars crying the whole way back, so I forgo his bath and just put him straight to bed.
I then get to tidying up downstairs, putting up some laundry and making the beds before the boys get home.
In the meantime, the YMCA has taken our payment for Finn’s half-day soccer camp, which starts the week after next. ($30)
Daily total: $30
