In the third act of Brooklyn – Colm Tóibín’s 2009 novel about a young Irish woman who emigrates to New York in the 1950s, later released as a film of the same name starring our very own Saoirse Ronan – our heroine, Eilis Lacey, returns to Ireland after a tragic event means she is needed at home.

Eilis has been busy making a life for herself in Brooklyn, but now she is thrust back into her old life, a life that, suddenly, doesn’t seem all that bad. She has a semi-decent job; she is being courted by a not-remotely-objectionable young man (played in the movie by Domhnall Gleeson); she is no longer the fish out of water she feels she will always be in New York.

The problem is, she is – unbeknownst to her family and friends – married to her NYC beau, a young Italian plumber named Tony (a snack, pictured above), so she can’t possibly stay in Ireland… can she?

Have I mentioned: I’m going home next week?
